Develop and implement fermentation-based biochemicals production technologies to replace oil-based chemicals and outperform alternatives in terms of water usage, emitted CO2 and arable land usage.

Currently we are up-scaling a novel L-lactic acid production process, enabling a more sustainable and cost-effective production of lactic acid. Lactic acid is used in cleaning formulations, food preservation, poly-lactic acid (PLA) production and many other applications. PLA, the most used application for lactic acid, is a low-carbon emitting alternative to conventional petrochemical-based plastics.

By using European Sugar Beet as feedstock, the novel production process is able to decrease the water usage in irrigation by 20 to 500 times and the arable land usage by 5 times. The novel lactic acid production process is calculated to reduce at least 10% in CO2 emissions and energy usage when compared to the traditional production process.
